Rich History and Legend
Mosinee’s roots date back to 1790 when French trapper John Lewis DuBay wintered nearby. His son, John Baptiste DuBay, later established a fur trading post along the Wisconsin River. The area’s history is deeply intertwined with the Menominee people and early settlers, and remnants of this heritage can still be explored today, including historical markers and the grave of John Baptiste DuBay in Knowlton.
Over the years, Mosinee evolved from a bustling logging town to a thriving community centered around paper mills and hydroelectric power. While the once-raging rapids of the river have been tamed, the city’s connection to nature remains strong, with forested riverbanks and the serene beauty of Mosinee Hill serving as reminders of its storied past.
